Creative Ideas For Increasing Your Sense Of Peace
Grace Cox
A sense of peace is not usually something discovered by accident. It comes from taking small, intentional moments to slow down, check in with yourself, and reconnect with what helps you feel grounded. Simple practices like creative expression, mindful activities, and connecting with others can help us step away from the demands of daily life and return to the present moment.
Life can feel and become incredibly busy. Between work, school, family responsibilities, relationships, and the many unexpected challenges that come up, it can sometimes feel like there is no time to slow down. Many people end up waiting for life to become less stressful before allowing themselves to feel peaceful. We say things like "when I finish this, then I'll rest" or "I'll take time for myself when everything else is taken care of first." However, the reality is that things may never completely slow down.
While we cannot control everything that happens around us, we can create moments that help us increase that sense of peace.
Getting Creative
Sometimes in the midst of our busy lives, things that used to bring a sense of peace and calm no longer do. A favorite movie might no longer help you unwind, or your usual evening routine may start to feel more like just another task on your to-do list.
This leaves a great opportunity to get creative and try something new. Exploring different activities can help you discover new ways to relax, express yourself, and increase that sense of peace. You might actually be surprised by what brings you peace. By staying curious to new experiences and noticing which activities leave you feeling lighter, calmer, or more refreshed, you may uncover new ways that bring peace that you never expected.
Engage in Something Artistic
You don't have to consider yourself "creative" or "artistic" to enjoy the benefits of making something. Creative activities overall can be a surprisingly effective way to re-discover a sense of peace. They give your mind something positive to focus on and can become a break from the busyness of everyday life.
- Peace Collage: Gather magazines, printed photos, inspirational quotes, or meaningful words and arrange them into a collage that represents what peace looks and feels like to you.
- Mindful Photography: Take your phone or camera on a walk and look for anything that catches your eye or brings you comfort and makes you smile. Intentionally pause, breathe, and notice what is happening in your surroundings while you take a photo.
- Coloring Book: If you prefer something more simple, pull out a coloring book. Whether you're using crayons, colored pencils, markers, or paint, coloring can be calming because it gives your mind something enjoyable to focus on.
- Peace Box: Decorate a small box and fill it with calming reminders, encouraging notes, photos, and sensory items. When you start to feel overwhelmed, open your peace box and take a few moments to interact with some of the things that help ground and bring you a sense of peace.
Self-Care
Finding your sense of peace doesn't always require doing something big or elaborate. Sometimes it's the simple moments of caring for yourself that have the greatest impact. Think of these activities as opportunities to pause, recharge, and reconnect with what helps you feel calm and refreshed.
- Invite a Friend: Peace doesn’t always have to be found alone. Invite a friend or loved one to join you for a self-care activity, such as going for a walk, grabbing coffee, cooking a meal together, or simply sitting down to talk. Sharing these moments can strengthen your relationships while creating memories that leave you feeling supported and refreshed.
- Spa Day: Create a relaxing spa experience at home with simple activities like taking a warm bath or shower, painting your nails, lighting a candle, using a face mask, or applying your favorite lotion.
- Cloud Watching: Find a comfortable place to sit or lie down and spend a few minutes watching the clouds pass overhead. As you watch, focus on your breathing and allow yourself to be fully present. It's a simple reminder that not every moment has to be productive.
- Disconnect from Technology: Sometimes time away from screens can help create more space for peace. Give yourself a break from the constant notifications, messages, and scrolling and focus on something that helps you recharge instead.
"Feel Good" Comfort
At times the things that bring us the most peace are the simple comforts we already know and love. Taking the time to indulge in small comfort moments can help us slow down and create a little more peace in our day.
- Read/Listen To a Book: Take some time to get lost in a good book, listen to an audiobook, or enjoy a podcast that brings you comfort or inspiration. Allow yourself to step away from your daily responsibilities for a little while and focus on something that feels enjoyable.
- Comfort Meal: Think about the foods that make you feel happy and relaxed. Prepare or enjoy a favorite meal. This can be a simple way to practice self-care and create a comforting moment in your day.
- Listen To Calming Music: Create a playlist and listen to music that makes you feel relaxed and comforted. Whether you enjoy acoustic, instrumental, lyrical, or simply sounds of nature, allow yourself to listen without distractions. Notice how different songs affect your mood and choose the ones that leave you feeling most at peace.
- Wrap Yourself in a Cozy Blanket: You can be even simpler. Grab your favorite blanket, get comfortable, and give yourself permission to rest. A few quiet moments of physical comfort can help you amidst a busy day.
Creating More Peace in Your Life
Increasing your sense of peace is a personal journey that can change over time. Sometimes, the activities, routines, or hobbies that once helped us feel calm and refreshed may no longer have the same effect. As life changes, our needs change too, and it can be helpful to stay curious and explore new ways to reconnect with ourselves. However, sometimes finding peace can feel difficult when we are carrying stress, past experiences, overwhelming emotions, or challenges that feel too heavy to navigate alone. In those moments, additional support can make a meaningful difference.
Therapy can provide a safe and supportive space to explore what may be getting in the way of feeling that sense of peace. Working with a therapist can help you better understand yourself, process emotions, and develop tools that support your overall well-being.
You do not have to wait until things feel overwhelming to seek support. Increasing peace is not about having a life without challenges. It is about learning how to care for yourself and discovering the tools that help you feel more grounded, connected, and supported. Whether that comes through artistic activities, intentional self-care and comfort, or the support of therapy, each step toward increasing your sense of peace is an opportunity to better understand yourself and what you need.
