Trauma-informed therapy: Trauma-informed therapy helps people process traumatic events by showing understanding and sensitivity to trauma-related issues. With this type of therapy, the therapist uses any different types of intervention to assist the client in processing the trauma. Trauma-informed treatment seeks to empower the client with skills and strategies to help them understand and process how their trauma affects them and their behaviors. Trauma therapists use physical and emotional safety in sessions, collaboration, transparency, and competency. Trauma-informed therapy has a client to begin to take a deeper look at the trauma and how it has affected the client. In addition to helping those who have experienced trauma in childhood or adulthood, trauma-informed therapy has many other benefits. The approach can ensure your emotional safety even if you are not receiving treatment specifically for your trauma. Although not everyone has experienced trauma, a trauma-sensitive approach will not harm someone who does not need trauma-informed care. Consequently, many providers use trauma-informed approaches in every session, not just those related to a specific trauma. behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment proven to help

emotional and behavioral issues in children and adolescents impacted by trauma.

About Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT)Trauma-Focused Cognitive

Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) was developed by Drs. Anthony Mannarino, Judith

Cohen, and Esther Deblinger. TF-CBT is an evidence-based treatment that has

been evaluated and refined during the past 25 years to help children and

adolescents recover after trauma. It is a conjoint therapy that works with the

child/adolescent and their parents or caregivers. TF-CBT uses a skills-based

understanding to assist clients in healing their trauma. Exposure to the trauma

narrative, as well as reminders of the trauma or emotions associated with the

trauma, are often used to help the patient reduce avoidance and maladaptive

associations with the trauma. Note, that this exposure is controlled and

planned collaboratively by the provider and patient so the patient chooses what

they do. The goal is to return a sense of control, self-confidence, and

predictability to the patient, and reduce escape and avoidance behaviors.

TF-CBT is a short-term intervention that lasts anywhere from eight to 25

sessions and can take place at our office. Treatment takes place with a

non-offending parent or caregiver. Often, the treatment will begin where the

child and non-offending caregiver have separate therapy sessions and advance to

engaging in joint sessions.

EMDR therapy: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy is a psychotherapy treatment proven to help people recover from traumatic and distressing experiences. EMDR can help alleviate symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders in people who have experienced trauma. EMDR has become widely used in the Trauma field. EMDR therapy is a phased, focused approach to treating trauma and other symptoms by reconnecting the traumatized person in a safe and measured way to the images, self-thoughts, emotions, and body sensations associated with the trauma and allowing the natural healing powers of the brain to move toward adaptive resolution. EMDR is based on the idea that symptoms occur when trauma and other negative or challenging experiences overwhelm the brain’s natural ability to heal. The healing process can be facilitated and completed through bilateral stimulation while the client is re-experiencing the trauma in the context of the safe environment of the therapist’s office (dual awareness). Through EMDR, individuals safely reprocess traumatic information until it is no longer psychologically disruptive to their lives. Over time, exposure to traumatic memories will no longer induce negative feelings and distressing symptoms. EMDR uses 8 phases of treatment to help you overcome your trauma.
